Rube Goldberg Machine
I did my Rube Goldberg machine with Ingrid, Sam and Michael. A Rube Goldberg machine is a series of complex steps to finish a simple task. We started off with a simple outline of what we wanted it to look like. Our ending goal was to feed fish in a fish bowl. We started the project and had to adjust many things. Our class worked on this project for about three days a week for two hours for six weeks. Our class then presented at a presentation night to the community.
For many of our steps we had to revise them to be able to work. We needed to explain all the physics required to do the task. For each step we calculated all the physics in the motion and explain what they were. We had judges, other classmates, and the teacher judge our project.
In each step there is a certain amount of physics. For the first step it is an inclined plain and has a mechanical advantage of 4.9m/s2. In the second step we used a funnel to have a force of 0.0311N on the falling marble. The third step of rolling the marble down the screw has a mechanical advantagr of 1.2m/s2. For steps four and five of knocking down dominoes and blocks of wood they have the same force as step two. The force of step six, which it the lever is 3.6N. Step seven uses potential to kinetic energy. The plastic tube is step eight and has a force of 4.6N. The pulley for the ninth step has a mechanical advantagr of 2 because there is two strings that are not being pulled down on. The wedge holding the tennis ball that will be dropped has a mechanical advantage of 1.95m/s2. The last step of tipping the cup of fishfood has a force of 0.28N.
I feel like our group was really good at communicating. We all knew what there was to get done. I learned that if you take a leadership role you can really be involved in the project. As i was leading our group for a while it felt good to be well organized and have a set to do list. In the end we all put our ideas together and accomplished something I am proud of.
One thing I need to improve improve on is staying focused the whole time. As we were working I sometimes got off task a few times. As a group we should have all done equal amounts of the project. I feel like I should have told my group to split up the amount of work a little bit more because I feel like mostly just two of us did most of the work.
